What is a hepatologist?
A hepatologist is a specialist in diseases of the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreas. In Australia, hepatologists are gastroenterologists with additional expertise in liver disease.
Do I need a referral to see a liver specialist?
Yes. A referral from your GP or another specialist is required. Please bring recent blood test and imaging results to your appointment.
My GP says I have fatty liver — should I see a specialist?
Fatty liver (MASLD) is common and often managed by your GP. Specialist review is helpful if liver tests remain abnormal, there are signs of liver scarring, or the cause is unclear. Your GP can advise and refer.
Can hepatitis B and C be treated?
Hepatitis C can usually be cured with modern antiviral tablets. Hepatitis B is managed with regular monitoring and, where needed, antiviral medication to protect the liver.
